Student strives to heal after deadly crash abroad

It’s a story of a young woman who fought to survive after a deadly vehicle crash killed three of her Boston University classmates in New Zealand.

Meg Theriault was in the vehicle that day too. She survived, but her life was forever changed by a brain injury so significant that part of her skull had to be removed.

She had spent the semester abroad in Australia and was in New Zealand with 16 other students when the van she was riding in crashed.

The group was headed to Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a trek through volcanic terrain with a view of the peak portrayed as Mount Doom in the “Lord of the Rings” movie trilogy, according to The Associated Press.
