NORMAN — Six University of Oklahoma sororities and fraternities joined forces this year to help United Way of Norman by donating their homecoming float budgets.
The Greek organizations decided to donate the money they would have used to build floats for the OU Homecoming Parade to the organization.
"We really wanted to help the people of Norman,” said
Hayley Spencer, Kappa Alpha Theta Homecoming Chair. "We wanted to put our finances and time toward something meaningful.”
They selected United Way of Norman to receive their donation because it helps multiple Norman agencies, said Spencer, 20, a junior at OU.
The students will contribute more than $6,600. They also hosted a children’s Halloween carnival last week in partnership with
Community After School Program as one of their community service projects.
The students still participated in Saturday’s parade. They marched and handed out candy. They also carried a banner, announcing their decision to donate to United Way.
The Greek houses participating included: sororities
Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Phi Lambda; and fraternities Phi Delta Theta,
Phi Gamma Delta and
Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
United Way of Norman is in the middle of its annual fundraising campaign.
Agency officials and community volunteers are working to raise $2.15 million by Dec. 3. The money helps support nonprofit agencies in Norman.
