Suicide prevention hot line sees 65 percent increase in Oklahoma calls

Hot line calls from Oklahomans considering suicide increased more than 65 percent during the first quarter of this year compared with last year, according to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

Hot line calls from Oklahomans considering suicide grew more than 65 percent during the first quarter of this year compared with last year, according to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

From January through March, the service received 1,959 calls from Oklahomans, with most routed to Oklahoma City-based Heartline. For the same period last year, the number was 1,183.

Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Terri White expressed concern with the increase in call volume from people who may be considering suicide as "their last and only alternative.
