Wednesday is National Hot Dog Day, according to the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

In Oklahoma City, there are numerous places to pig out on hot dogs, including the familiar franks of Coney Island Hot Dogs downtown and the gourmet dogs at Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs.

Vlassios “Bill” Mihas, a Greek immigrant who purchased a hot dog business from its aging owner in 1964 in downtown Oklahoma City, and Amie Gehlert, the executive sous chef at Mutts Amazing Hot Dogs, offer vastly different versions, but both agree the hot dog is a great American tradition that Oklahomans love.

July, which also is Hot Dog Month, is when Americans eat about 10 percent of the hot dogs consumed annually. During peak hot dog season, stretching from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Americans typically consume 7 billion hot dogs, the council says.
