EDMOND — Summerstock Productions, in partnership with the University of Central Oklahoma, will present the original 1954 Broadway version of “Peter Pan: The Musical” on Thursday through June 15 and also June 19-22 at UCO’s Mitchell Hall Theater.
Based on the play by J.M. Barrie, “Peter Pan” was adapted into a musical with lyrics by Carolyn Leigh and music by Morris “Moose” Charlap.
True to the classic plot of “Peter Pan,” the musical follows a boy who escapes growing up by spending his life in Neverland, battling pirates alongside his new friends, the Darling children.
“In honor of Summerstock Productions’ 10th anniversary, we’ve chosen to present ‘Peter Pan,’ as it will be our most ambitious production to date,” said Shannon Hurleigh, Summerstock’s executive director.
“The production will include the large-scale technical aspects of making Peter and the Darling children fly and a dynamic cast suited to perform as the iconic characters,” Hurleigh said.
The production will feature Renee Anderson as Peter Pan and Matthew Alvin Brown as Captain Hook.
Anderson established her place on the stage in Oklahoma with Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City Repertory Theatre and the Oklahoma Theatre Company. She also has toured nationally in productions of “Oklahoma” and “The Music Man.”
UCO alumnus Brown has written and starred in multiple rock operas and musicals, including “Rainbow Around the Sun,” which was adapted into an award-winning motion picture.
“It’s always a delight to share the stage with Renee Anderson,” Brown said.
“We’ve been able to play opposite each other a few times over the last couple of years, and she’s such a magnificent performer,” Brown said. “I think we have great chemistry.”
Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
