Share “Sun, headliners heat up festival ”

PRYOR - It didn't matter what level of ticket you had Thursday at Country Fever 2006, the most popular item was shade.

It was 90 degrees at the Catch the Fever Festival Grounds with no clouds to provide a cooling break.

But opening day headliners such as Checotah native Carrie Underwood and high-energy band Sawyer Brown helped the crowd forget the heat as the sun went down.

Sylvia and Trisha Souder from Wasola, Mo., have been to all four Country Fever shows and pay top dollar for VIP tickets that include reserved seats, an air-conditioned tent, free soft drinks and beer, and two meals a day.

"We bought our tickets for this last year," Sylvia Souder said, sitting in the VIP tent where the air conditioning was working with little success.

"We went to the Route 66 Festival in Springfield, Mo., then we came here," she said. "We like the up-close parking, the close-up seats and, sometimes, the artists come in the VIP tent to eat."

Doris Monson came from Ardmore and bought a VIP package.

"It's my first trip here," Monson said. "I'm looking forward to Brooks & Dunn Saturday night."

Umbrellas were popular
A stroll through the 400-acre festival grounds showed fans wearing all kinds of hats, some sitting in chairs with umbrellas attached for shade.

Some people used the afternoon to work on a tan, while others walked through an area where vendors sold all kinds of things, from battery-operated personal fans to lottery tickets.

Country Fever President and General Manager Mark Nuessle was busy handling last-minute details for this year and making plans for the 2007 festival.
