Everyone at Virginia Tech knows Harold Gray, even if they don't know his name.

He attends every sporting event on campus. He arrives early, oftentimes before the players. And he walks to every game, match and meet.

"Only back surgery has kept me away,” Gray said.

Any surprise he bought a seat on the softball team's charter to Oklahoma City this week?

Gray is a lifelong Hokie fan, having lived in Blacksburg, Va., for 71 years.

"Everybody asks me if I've lived there all my life,” he said, a twinkle in his eye. "I tell them, ‘Not yet.'”

One of Gray's earliest memories is as a batboy for the Hokie baseball team back in 1948.

But his passion goes beyond one team or one sport. He is as dedicated to softball, tennis and swimming as he is to football, basketball and baseball.

"You can't make 'em all,” Gray said, "but I get to parts of all of them.”
