Author Tom Andry moved back to the United States from Australia while preparing his third superhero novel, “Bob Moore: Hostile Territory” for release.
His hero, Bob Moore, an ex-private eye who has made a career out of embarrassing superheroes, also makes a move in the new book.
Bob is invited to become the U.S. ambassador to the floating Super City after the previous two ambassadors have ended up dead. It's hoped that he can ferret out the secret of what's happening in the city, populated and governed by those with superpowers.
Andry, father of three boys, is the associate editor of Audioholics.com and host of the AV Rant podcast. The first Bob Moore book, “No Hero,” has been downloaded more than 50,000 times as an e-book, and also has a paperback version in print. Bob returned in a sequel, “Desperate Times,” and this year is back again in “Hostile Territory.” Andry described the origin for the floating city on which the superheroes live.
“It sounds cliché but it came to me in a dream,” Andry said. “I woke up one morning after having dreamt that I was on a floating city. Or trying to get to one. It was a bit of both. After that, the plot just developed organically.”
Andry says writers like Frank Miller (“Hard Boiled”), Alan Moore (“Watchmen”) and Grant Morrison (“Animal Man”) are among his favorites. He cites Matt Wagner comics as his biggest comics influence. He said Bob and his superhero world have become easier to write with each book.
“After three books, Bob writes himself,” Andry said. “All I need to do is come up with the situation and see what the character does. Often, I feel I'm more surprised than my readers at Bob's actions.”
