‘Superman vs. the Elite (Blu-ray)'

The latest DC Entertainment animated offering features Superman facing off against a team of antiheroes who question the hero's moral code.

“Superman vs. the Elite” is based on “Action Comics” No. 775, written by Joe Kelly and released back in 2001. The story, “What's So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” questioned whether Superman was relevant in an ever more violent and dangerous world.

Kelly adapts his story into this animated feature, which covers much of the same ground. If it doesn't quite hit the heights of its comic counterpart, it's still a well-done animated feature.

George Newbern (“Father of the Bride”), who voiced Superman in the popular “Justice League” animated series, returns to the character here, and his depiction is spot on. Pauley Perrette (“NCIS”) is believable as hard-bitten Lois Lane, who provides great banter with Clark Kent and his alter ego.

The new superpowered team The Elite isn't above maiming or killing villains to prevent future violence. Superman stands in their way, saying their powers don't give them the right to become executioners.
