Michael Brady had given up.

The 60-year-old Oklahoma City man underwent the kidney dialysis and dragging around that three years ago replaced the camping, fishing, hunting and generally enjoying life that he had shared with his wife, Leslie. His medical problems swept away most of life's fun, along with his medical equipment business.

Brady had gotten a liver transplant, but five long years had passed, and he still hadn't gotten the kidney transplant that could change his life.

"I didn't think it would ever happen,” Brady said. "After five years, you don't have any hope.”

But hope is part of each day for kidney transplant surgeon Dr. E.N. Scott Samara.

His team called Brady on Memorial Day weekend. A kidney was available.

Each kidney transplant is a bit different but this one marked a milestone. When it was over about three hours later, Samara, 67, learned it was his 1,000th kidney transplant performed at Integris Baptist Medical Center.

"It's been a great, rewarding career to be able to help people who've been able to better the quality of their lives,” he said.
