A man under guard in an Oklahoma City hospital is accused of killing his grandparents in Maryland and then driving their car to Weatherford, where he attempted suicide, court papers show.
Matthew Charles Long, 31, is a suspect in the deaths of George Vaughn Pepper, 87, and Marjorie Marie Pepper, 85, of Baltimore, according to a search warrant affidavit filed Monday in Oklahoma County District Court.
George Pepper was a retired state trooper who served with the Maryland state police for 30 years, authorities said.
A warrant for Long's arrest was issued after police in Baltimore found the couple dead inside their home Sept. 10. Long lived with the victims but was not at the residence when police arrived to check on the couple, according to the affidavit.
The couple's vehicle was missing, and police found evidence in Long's bedroom possibly linking him to the slayings, police reported.
Baltimore County detectives obtained video surveillance of Long driving the couple's vehicle and withdrawing money from a bank near Baltimore after the couple were found dead.
Police in Weatherford found Long on Sept. 11 in a hotel room, where he apparently attempted suicide and left a note saying “I'm sorry for what I did,” according to the affidavit.
