A dark though heartfelt novel, "The Killing Tree” (Center Street, a division of Hachette Book Group, $13.99) by Rachel Keener takes us on a journey through 18-year-old Mercy Heron’s caged life, removed from the outside world, in Crooktop, a small town in the mountains. Her mother died during childbirth, and she is raised by her grandparents: Mamma Rutha, a free spirit in love with nature, and Father Heron, a callous, narrow-minded preacher.
