Sutton: Life's not always fair

Published: April 30, 2008

Former Oklahoma State basketball coach Sean Sutton told KWTV-9 that he plans to spend the next year trying "to become a better coach” by traveling to visit coaches he respects, including Roy Williams, Rick Barnes and Tom Izzo. It was Sutton's first television interview since his resignation on April 1.

Sutton said the saga has taught him that life's not always fair.

"And there's a lot of challenges,” he said. "You've gotta pick yourself up.”

Sutton said he considers new OSU coach Travis Ford "a friend, and I want him to be successful here. I think he'll come in here and do a good job for Oklahoma State.”

As part of Sutton's settlement agreement with OSU, which will pay him $1.36 million post-taxes by the end of 2008, Sutton and the school agreed to "act professionally toward each other when speaking to the news media now and in the future.”

Sutton resigned April 1 after compiling a 39-29 record in two years as OSU's head coach. Under Sutton the Cowboys played in two straight NITs, losing in the first round both years.

OSU hired new coach Travis Ford on April 17.
