Father’s Day gifts are special
DEAR MELBA: Want a Father’s Day chuckle? Four-year-old Sam loved candy as much as his dad did. Sam’s mother gave Sam’s dad a box of chocolates for Father’s Day.
The candy box was open, and Sam reached out and touched a piece. His mom said, “Sam, you know if you touch it, you have to eat it.” Sam then reached out and tenderly patted the top of every piece of candy. He then turned to his mother and said, “Well, now I guess I have to eat them all.”

Dad is turning 100
DEAR MELBA: Our father, Murrel McMahan, will be 100 years old June 23. He is a longtime member of the Southern Baptist Campers on Mission group and the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams.
When he was 95, he went to Integris Southwest Medical Center and became a volunteer. Recently, James Moore, the hospital’s president presented him with the “You Make a Difference” award for outstanding service to the hospital.
One of Dad’s favorite hobbies is reading his mail. He would thoroughly enjoy birthday greetings from readers. His address is 6109 S Shartel Ave., Oklahoma City, OK 73139.

Strawberry Cream Pie redux
DEAR MELBA: My sister noticed a mistake in our mom’s Strawberry Cream Pie recipe printed in your column May 21.

Here is the corrected version.
STRAWBERRY CREAM PIE
11/3 cups flour
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup cold margarine
1/4 cup shortening
3 tablespoons cold water
•Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In small mixing bowl, mix flour and salt. Cut in margarine and shortening until it looks like coarse crumbs. Add water, mixing as little as possible to a ball of dough.
•Flour counter and roll dough to fit 10-inch pie pan. Dampen rim of pan and arrange dough in pan. Crimp crust and prick with fork. Bake 25-28 minutes, gently pressing down crust about halfway through baking to remove air.
21/2 cups water
1 cup sugar
2/3 cup cornstarch
Pinch of salt
3 egg yolks
1 can (12 ounces) Milnot
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 tablespoons butter or margarine
•Place water in 2- to 3-quart saucepan, and set on medium heat.
•In small bowl, stir together sugar, cornstarch and salt. Add egg yolks and approximately one-third of the Milnot. Using a whisk, stir until all is incorporated and smooth.
•The remaining Milnot goes in the water. When mixture is just at the scalding stage, add the sugar-cornstarch mixture in a stream while whisking, so that it is quickly incorporated without scrambling the eggs. Continue to whisk until just boiling and thickened. Remove from heat, and add vanilla and butter. Set aside.
1 cup water
2 to 3 tablespoons cornstarch
3/4 cup sugar
Pinch of salt
1 package (16 ounces) frozen strawberries
12 to 15 drops red food coloring
•In 1-quart saucepan combine water, cornstarch, sugar and salt. Mix well. Add strawberries. Over medium heat, stir lightly until thick and clear. Add food coloring, mix well and set aside.
Note: If using fresh strawberries, do not add until mixture is thickened.
1/2 cup water
1 scant tablespoon cornstarch
3 egg whites, room temperature
1/4 cup sugar
1 small jar marshmallow cream
•In small saucepan, mix water and cornstarch. Cook over medium heat until thick and clear. Set aside.
•In large bowl of electric mixer, beat egg whites on high speed, adding sugar gradually. When egg whites are stiff, add cornstarch mixture and beat well. Add marshmallow cream and beat until all is incorporated.
•Assembly: Pour cream filling into pie shell. Gently cover with strawberry filling. Top with meringue, sealing to crust all around. Bake 10 to 12 minutes. Cool completely before cutting.
