Swine flu shots given free of cost and hassles

I was ready to fight.

I brought my paperwork, my attitude and my bulletproof vest. I was ready to kick down the door like I was on a SWAT team, holding up a picture of my daughter like a police badge and shouting, "I am a custodial parent of an infant less than 6 months of age! Vaccinate me!”

I was leaving with that swine flu shot, and nobody was going to stand in my way.

Turns out, no one was standing in my way.

A couple weeks ago, my husband and I received free H1N1 vaccines from the Oklahoma City-County Health Department at one of their many clinics. At the time, we were eligible to receive the shot because we are parents of a young infant. Now the shots are open to anyone.

Going through the clinic was a cinch, and the workers were fantastic. I was mentally prepared for a hassle the size of the swine flu hype, but it was no big deal. No line. No wait. No hassle. No bulletproof vest.

The best part: no cost.

The health department is doing a great public service by handing out these shots. More free clinics are scheduled for the coming weeks.

Hopefully folks will take advantage, reducing their likelihood of getting sick or passing the illness along to someone else, like an overzealous custodial parent of an infant less than 6 months of age.
