TAHLEQUAH — Backers of a ban on electronic cigarettes on Tahlequah city property have pulled their request for the city council to consider the measure this week.

The Cherokee County Communities of Excellence Tobacco Control Program has asked the Tahlequah City Council to remove the proposal from the council's Monday meeting. Mayor Jason Nichols tells a local newspaper that the issue is tabled for the time being.

Nichols says the city heard opposition from users of electronic cigarettes and businesses that sell the products. He says it wasn't clear to residents that the ban would only affect city property, not the entire city.

Nichols says the city will continue to have discussions on the issue.
