TCU athletic director clarifies Big 12 expansion comments

From Wire Reports • Published: May 24, 2012

TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte is learning the hard way what being in the Big 12 Conference means, at least from a media glare perspective.

Del Conte clarified misconstrued comments he made Wednesday morning on a Lubbock, Texas, radio station and at a breakfast gathering concerning rumors that Clemson, Miami and Florida State are interested in joining the Big 12.

“Isn’t it amazing, two years ago the league’s going to dissolve — you guys (Texas Tech) are going to the Pac-10,” Del Conte said at the breakfast, according to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, “to today, Clemson, Miami, Florida State, they all want in the Big 12. Isn’t that amazing? Two years ago, we were going from being distintegrated to now everyone wants us.”

Del Conte said he was just referring to the rumors when he mentioned that Miami and others were interested in joining during the breakfast gathering, which came after the radio interview.

“We know we’re going to have to do something but it might not be for a while,” Del Conte said during the radio interview. “We’re sitting in the catbird seat right now. Let’s not rush it. Let’s take our time and move forward. It’s exciting to have all these teams now want into the Big 12 when less than two years ago the Big 12 was going to disintegrate.”
