Teachers should have the option

Published: February 8, 2013

Regarding Maryann Sonntag's “Ban on some weapons would be best option” (Point of View, Feb. 2): I agree with Sonntag except her statement that teachers don't need to be armed. Police presence is important, but what if the officer can't get to the classroom in time? Should the teacher be left without any form of defense not only for herself, but also for her students?

Teachers shouldn't be required to have a concealed weapon, but they should have that option, especially if they have a license. If teachers feel safer having police presence, wouldn't they feel that much more secure being able to defend themselves?
