The patrol says the 19-year-old was driving a Jeep Liberty about 4:30 p.m. Sunday when it stalled near U.S. Highway 81.

Trooper Chance Lipe says the train conductor spotted the stranded vehicle and applied the brakes, giving the teen enough time to escape the vehicle before it was hit.

Lipe says the train was delayed for about two hours while the tracks were cleared.

I agree they should set up some stings. It would save people's lives. How stupid can you be...to dare a train? It can't stop quickly and the result is a totalled car at the very least...or death.

Its a reminder of the basic traffic laws that used to be taught in driver's ed. Never, ever stop on a train track. If you vehicle stalls you are doomed. The one thing I see people do at Memorial and Kelly is to stop under the crossing gates. Europe does a much better job of teaching its drivers about crossing safety. Only in the USA do people rely more on suing train companies than to not park their vehicles on tracks. Then you have the people who always think they are smart enough and good enough drivers to run the crossing when the gates are lowering or down. Its why they need to make all crossing quadruple gated. That's where two sets of gates go down on both sides. Its probably a good time for OCPD to conduct a few stings like they do every few years on Broadway. I think a great place to start, Mr. Citty, is Kelly and Memorial. Especially during the construction phase. People get quite angry at the trains and run the crossing all day long. There is an average of 1 train every 15 minutes all day long. If Edmond is reading this, how about you do a sting at 33rd and the water tower. Park a few Evel Knievels around it for an hour and see just how many tickets you can give out.
