Hannah Roark will receive a trip with a chaperone to compete in the national finals in Washington next month. Her teacher, Sally Walkiewicz, also will attend the finals. The national champion will receive a $20,000 college scholarship.

Roark also will receive $200, and her school will receive $500 to buy poetry books.

The competition was March 1 at Oklahoma City University. The Oklahoma Humanities Council, Oklahoma Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation sponsored the reading.

Five regional finalists represented their schools in the state finals: Nathan Holliday, a Putnam City West High School junior; Elizabeth McLeod, a Milburn High School senior; Katie Priddle, a Fletcher High School junior; second-place winner Katy Plummer, a Skiatook High School senior; and Roark.

N. Scott Momaday, the Oklahoma Centennial state poet laureate, read some of his poems at the event.
