Peter Placker testified Monday on the first day of a preliminary hearing for 27-year-old Kevin Sweat. Sweat faces two counts of first-degree murder in the June 2008 killings of Placker's granddaughter, 13-year-old Taylor Placker, and her friend, 11-year-old Skylar Whitaker.
Peter Placker testified that the girls had taken a walk along the rural road a few minutes before he went looking for them. Placker says he found Taylor lying in the ditch while Skylar's body was on an embankment above her.
Sweat has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
A judge has set aside three days for Sweat's hearing.
