Texas' new approach to football assistant coach contracts

www.usatoday.com Published: February 3, 2014

Texas broke the mold when it hired Charlie Strong and the Longhorns are doing the same when it comes to paying its assistants.

The university is set to employ its entire football assistant coaching staff under multi-year contracts for the first time. Each of Strong's nine full-time assistants would receive a guaranteed two-year deal, with defensive coordinator Vance Bedford set to be the highest paid at $800,000. That would put Bedford among the highest paid assistants in the country, with a chance to make $185,000 more in performance bonuses.

Why is this significant? Since USA Today began tracking assistant coaches' pay in 2009, only one Texas assistant coach (former defensive coordinator Will Muschamp) has ever been employed under a contract with guarantees of this kind.
