Texas Tech revisited: Oklahoma State steps into Red Raiders' role tonight against Texas

STILLWATER — Biggest home game in school history, some say. A chance to spoil the national title hopes of the blueblood Longhorns and give a working-class football program a shot at that elusive first Big 12 championship.

A record crowd going nutso in a gorgeously renovated coliseum. A senior quarterback leading a whizbang offense seeking an upset on an ABC Saturday night special.

Yep, that Texas Tech-Texas game last November was really something.

The zip code, the uniforms, the formations change tonight. But the stakes do not when Oklahoma State steps into Tech’s role and seeks the same result.

Tech’s 39-38 victory 364 days ago turned the college football season upside down, and an OSU upset tonight would do the same.

"It’s going to be the Tech game of last year,” said UT safety Earl Thomas. "National television. The hostile environment.

"We’ll try to weather the storm and get a win.”

The Lubbock/Stillwater parallels aren’t exact. OSU comes in with a defeat (to Houston), else the Cowboys would be ranked fourth or fifth. That loss means Texas almost surely would emerge the victor of a three-way tie, which it did not a year ago after Tech went to Oklahoma and lost. OSU goes to Norman on Nov. 28. So the stakes are just as high for the Cowboys, not necessarily for the Longhorns.

"We’re going to get their best shot,” Texas quarterback Colt McCoy said. "It’ll be everything you see on film, then multiply that intensity times 10.”

If the Cowboys do deliver their best shot, they will win. The fans will see to that.

"Stillwater’s a tough place to play,” McCoy said. "One of the toughest. The fans are really close. They’re rowdy. Halloween, at night, it’s going to be a real fun game.”

A State victory would elevate the night to historic status. All the dreams of this program — new stadium, full house, championship contention — culminate tonight.

"I think, over the years, we’ve earned the respect from them and other teams in the conference that we can stay in there right with them,” OSU quarterback Zac Robinson said.

"Obviously, we haven’t been able to finish it off, and we’ve been real close. We know that we can be competitive and hopefully we can come out and play well.”

Oklahoma State football hasn’t been here before. But neither had Texas Tech until 364 days ago.

osu looks horrible. not ready for the big time. this is a blow out. the big 12 needs to move ou to the north so that we would have ou vs texas every year in the championship.

Okie State has to win games like this on their own turf if they ever want to be Big 12 champs. Yeah, there have been some bad calls, but they can't stop the Texas offense and throwing INT's for TD's doesn't help either.

Watching the game now, not really an OSU fan; however, it looks like the Big 12 officials are pulling an Arkansas/Florida calling of the game.

I guess 1:00 AM seems like mid day when you're on meth, hanging out in Watonga.

I thought the score of the UT-Tech game last year was 39-33.

oklahoma state has a chance too upset texas, if they bring there A-GAME ALL 4-quarters. osu defense needs too double-up on shipley and put pressure on colt all game day. he likes too run the quarterback draw or bootleg. need too keep a spy on him all day. like ou and tech did they put pressure on colt and did not give him time to find someone. sooner or later he will missfire. iam leaving at noon today too meet up with my osu-buddy from perkins, okla in okc. iam a diehard oklahoma sooner fan and a state fan as well. i would rather see osu win the big 12 south than any texas team, thats how i feel about it and the texas teams feel the same way about the oklahoma schools they play. no love lost between the states. zac and his offense will have too play inspire and smart football too beat texas. texas secondary is beatable if you out play them. texas front seven is good, but they wear down, if you use the no-huddle offense like ou did too them and tech as well. mack hates that when he can not substitue players in. that worries him as well. good luck osu this is a big game for the whole state of oklahoma and texas as well. i would like too see osu win, you guys will have too step it up today on primetime tv tonight. see you on the 20 yard line. i always root for the state schools.

Wouldn't be a bit surprised to see OSU break the hex this year. Zac is really playing well right now and the receivers are hanging tough without Dez. Texas may very well overlook a Bill Young led defense. For whatever reason, Gundy's offense started slow at the beginning of the year. I think a lot of that what just due to Zac being hobbled and having family issues with his grandfather being deathly ill. I truly believe OSU can finish this year. Texas is a good football team, but not great by any stetch of the imagination.

Dave, your favorite OU paper calls every OSU game "the biggest game ever".

Not any OSU fan. We have played in bigger games then this.
Jacob, Kansas - Oct 31, 2009 at 9:40 am
One BIG difference: Tech won because of Crabtree, OSU won't have Dez Bryant available.

At your age why are you up at 1:04 am commenting on a game you suppossedly dont care about? OSU has only played in one "biggest game ever" and were succesful earlier in the season. They didnt lay an egg in that one Dave! Facts are facts you are a gooner Dave!! Go Pokes!!

Nice try Dave. We can spot a sooner fan a mile away. Go Pokes and whoever happens to be playing OU.
James, New Milford - Oct 31, 2009 at 1:12 am
I don't really expect the 'Boys to win, but man I hope they at least show up and give themselves a chance. Being my age it gets kindof tiresome getting revved up for the next "biggest game ever" (of which there have been many) only to have the team lay another egg. Any-hoo, hope springs eternal, but facts are facts.
