The bat chat
•Woods: Until recently, the majority of bats were made of ash, but maple has gained in popularity. Ash is more flexible than maple but not as hard.

•Break patterns: Ash bats can split in the middle of the barrel, while maple bats typically break at the handle.

•Who makes them: Louisville Slugger has been in business for 124 years. About 10 companies make bats used by MLB players, including Mizuno, Easton, BWP, Rawlings and Marucci.

•Cost: Most pro quality bats range from $70 to $100.

•Who pays: MLB clubs provide bats for players, though some have endorsement deals with companies. RedHawks players typically keep about 8-10 bats.
