JASON WHITE

Notable: Mack Brown’s recruitment of Johnny Manziel as a defensive back has become a national punchline, but The Oklahoman made a similar error with a future Heisman Trophy winning quarterback: White made our newspaper’s 1998 All-State team out of Tuttle as a defensive back. … Chose the Sooners over Miami (Fla.). … Entered the 2001 Red River Rivalry for an injured Nate Hybl and led OU to a 14-3 victory. … Suffered the first of two season-ending ACL tears early in OU’s 20-10 loss at Nebraska in 2001. … White’s second career ACL tear came in OU’s second 2002 game, a 37-27 home win over Alabama. … Won the 2003 Heisman Trophy and finished third in the 2004 Heisman voting, behind winner Matt Leinart of USC and his own teammate, OU freshman running back Adrian Peterson. … Led OU to appearances in the 2003 and 2004 national championship games, but lost both of them (21-14 to LSU in the Sugar Bowl, then 55-19 to USC in the Orange Bowl). … Finished his career with 7,922 passing yards and 81 touchdowns with a .633 career completion percentage (627-990).

THREE MEMORABLE GAMES

Oklahoma 14, Texas 3
When: Oct. 6, 2001

White’s day: Entered the game early after starter Nate Hybl’s shoulder sprain. … White’s numbers weren’t particularly superb — he completed 16 of 23 passes for 108 yards and rushed 12 times for 38 yards — but his calm, efficient control of the OU offense was impressive in such a high-pressure situation. … On the Sooners’ lone scoring drive, White pitched to Quentin Griffin on an option play that went 17 yards to UT’s 13-yard line. Then White gained 11 yards on a QB keeper that set up Griffin’s 2-yard touchdown run. … White replaced Hybl after four series the next week at Kansas and played well. That performance helped him steal Hybl’s job before an ACL tear at Nebraska ended his season a few weeks later.
