The Chase: NASCAR's silly championship

The most bogus championship in sports heats up this weekend at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend.

NASCAR's chase for the Nextel Cup has three races remaining, and Matt Kenseth leads, with Jimmie Johnson on his tail.

They are legit contenders. Kenseth has four wins this year, Johnson five, including the Daytona 500.

But Kasey Kahne has six wins and is ninth in the standings, behind Denny Hamlin and Jeff Gordon, who each have two wins; Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Jeff Burton, who have one each; and even Mark Martin, who is without a first-place finish.

Cup points are distributed for poles earned and laps led and all kinds of finishes.

Not enough weight is put on victory.

NASCAR is like the old Continental Basketball Association system, by which teams earned standings points for winning a quarter. Silly, silly.

Look to golf for the proper model. Just win.

Leading after two rounds means squat, making eagles means squat, if you don't win.

Kasey Kahne should be battling Kenseth and Johnson for the Nextel Cup.
