Oklahoma State has led the Big 12 in rushing for four straight seasons. While it will be tough to extend that streak, running the ball will continue to be a key to OSU’s offensive success.

And the key to that success could be OSU’s receivers.

In recent years, OSU’s receiving corps have been among the best blocking groups in the Big 12.

“It’s been a mindset and it’s been a forte of the guys that have been here and taken a lot of pride in that,” receivers coach Gunter Brewer said.

Most people would expect blocking to take a lesser role on a receiver’s priority list in Dana Holgorsen’s new offense, but that’s not necessarily the case.

“As Coach Holgorsen will tell you in the screen game, the perimeter is so big and in this offense with guys getting the ball in space, guys have to match and block downfield also,” Brewer said. “So there’s no difference between the two offenses as far as blocking. How we block won’t be any different.”

OSU has several big receivers including Tracy Moore, Justin Horton and Chris Dinkins. And, ultimately, blocking is about effort and desire, so every receiver from Josh Cooper to Colton Chelf should be able to block well enough to create space for the Cowboys’ running backs.

“Hopefully, between the inside and outside receivers, we’ll be able to maintain that tradition that has been started here for the last four or five years and be a dominant blocking receiving corps,” Brewer said.
