OU opens its football season Saturday against Chattanooga, a school with one of the worst nicknames in collegiate sports: Mocs. Chattanooga was known as the Moccasins until 1996, when the official name was shortened to the Mocs, which has no discernible meaning. But don't think every unusual Division I-AA nickname is a bummer. The 10 best:
•10. Albany Great Danes: Who needs Bulldogs? •9. San Diego Toreros: Bullfighters. •8. Indiana State Sycamores: Who cares if it's a tree? •7. Mississippi Valley Delta Devils: Wonder if a mosquito is a delta devil? •6. Youngstown State Penguins: Who knew it was that cold in Stoopsville? •5. Richmond Spiders: I wish the OKC NBA team was named Spiders. •4. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers: What's a chanticleer? A roosters in fables. •3. Western Illinois Leathernecks: Always good to have the U.S. Marines on your side. •2. Campbell Fighting Camels: Nothing like a desert image in Buies Creek, N.C. •1. Western Carolina Catamounts: Shares this name for wild cats with Vermont.
