The list: Epic managers

Published: October 11, 2007

George Steinbrenner bought the Yankees in 1973; over the next 23 years, he made 21 managerial changes. That instability stopped with Joe Torre, who in 12 years managing the Yanks has won 10 division titles, six pennants, four World Series and never missed the playoffs.

Torre hasn't won the World Series since 2000 and might be out of a job soon. But those who claim Torre is headed to the Hall of Fame are not off base. Torre is one of only eight managers who rank in the top 10 in both managerial victories and World Series titles. Six are in the Hall of Fame, and Torre and Tony La Russa are not yet eligible.

1. Connie Mack: 3,731 wins (first) and five World Series (third).

2. John McGraw: 2,763 wins (second) and three World Series (tie-sixth).

3. Tony La Russa: 2,375 wins (third) and two World Series (tie-10th).

4. Sparky Anderson: 2,194 wins (fifth) and three World Series (tie-sixth).

5. Bucky Harris: 2,157 wins (sixth) and two World Series (tie-10th).

6. Joe McCarthy: 2,125 wins (seventh) and seven World Series (tie-first).

7. Joe Torre: 2,067 wins (eighth) and four World Series (tie-fourth).

8. Walt Alston: 2,040 wins (ninth) and four World Series (tie-fourth).
