Oklahoma junior forward Amath M'Baye has decided to enter the NBA Draft.
Oklahoma junior forward Amath M'Baye has decided to enter the NBA Draft.

Just last week at the NCAA Tournament post-game press conference, M’Baye said next year he will need to step up and take over the role that Romero Osby filled.

Well folks, he surprised us all.

Not that it was a huge surprise. It’s understandable – he’s an old college player (almost 24) in the age of one-and-dones. He’s originally from France (and also used to live in Africa) before he came to the United State when he was 15. He has no serious girlfriend tying him down. He also came from a family that struggled early in his life. He wants to give back. Understandable.

So can Euro Teams or the D-League really help him?

(Let’s just go out on a limb and say he doesn’t get drafted and starts next year on an NBA Team. I’m sure you’re willing to go there with me.)

Salaries on a D-league team range from $12,000 to $24,000. Then while traveling they are given $30 as spending money.

(Quite modest if you compare it to the NBA’s $100 traveling money … but anyways.)

The D-League series isn’t going to pay him much, but it’s going to likely pay him more than Oklahoma.

M’Baye said he will graduate with his degree in May in International Studies. If he were to go to any Euro Teams, here are some of the salary caps he’s dealing with, per ESPN::

BALTIC                              ADRIATIC
Zalgiris Kaunas*: 7M Montepaschi Siena*: 17.16M
Lietuvos Rytas*: 11M Virtus Bologna*: 14M
Turof (Polish team): 5.46M Lyon Villeurbanne: 7.5M
Alba Berlin: 9.36M Cibona Zagreb*: 4.68M
Dynamo Kiev: 11M Olimpia*: 3.12M

SPAIN                                RUSSIA
Real Madrid*: 39M CSKA Moscow*: 50M
FC AXA Barcelona*: 34.32M Khimki: 18M
Tau Vitoria*: 31.2M Dynamo Moscow: 20M
Badalona: 12.48M Unix (Russian): 14M
Unicaja Malaga*: 28.08M Dynamo Moscow region: 14M

BALKANS                                             ASIA
Panathinaikos Athens*: 42.12M Maccabi Tel Aviv*: 16M
Olympiacos Piraeus*: 35.88M Hapoel Jerusalem: 5M
Aris TT Bank*: 12.48M Efes Pilsen*: 12M
Partizan Belgrade*: 4.68M Fenerbahce Istanbul*: 11M
Red Star Belgrade*: 3.12M Besictas Istanbul: 6M

All you can compare these numbers to is what Amath M’Baye is making as a college player next year.

So that’s something versus nothing.
