One of the tricks of managing the top 10 rankings early in the season is weighing the necessary impact of a loss to another ranked team, particularly one from a larger class.

Carl Albert, with its loss to Class 6A No. 7 Southmoore, didn’t seem deserving of getting bumped out of the top spot. But part of that decision was impacted by the fact that the teams closes behind Carl Albert in the rankings all played unranked opponents to start the season. So there’s no reason to think a change atop the poll could still be ahead.

Del City and Shawnee, each having knocked off ranked 5A opponents jump into the poll this week, while Claremore and Coweta got bumped out.

Here is The Oklahoman’s updated Class 5A top 10 after the first week of football:

Rank, Team, Record (Prev.)
1. Carl Albert, 0-1 (1)
2. McAlester, 1-0 (2)
3. Guthrie, 1-0 (4)
4. Deer Creek, 1-0 (5)
5. Lawton MacArthur, 1-0 (7)
6. Del City, 1-0 (NR)
7. Shawnee, 1-0 (NR)
8. McGuinness, 0-1 (3)
9. Tulsa East Central, 0-1 (6)
10. Tulsa Kelley, 1-0 (10)
Dropped out: Coweta (8), Claremore (9)
