The Oklahoman's Class B rankings: Davenport slides back in

With some big games between ranked teams the last couple of weeks, the bottom spots of the Class B poll deserved some strong re-examination heading into Week 9.

Five teams are worthy of the final two spots in the poll.

Central Marlow and Davenport earned those positions, both with some solid wins and respectable performances in losses to higher ranked teams over the course of the season.

Merritt, which has lost via the mercy rule to Pond Creek-Hunter and Laverne the last two weeks, drops out of the poll — not necessarily because of those two losses, but because of the overall comparison of schedules. Keota, at 7-1, has a legitimate argument for a top-1o spot, but its 52-22 loss to Davenport gave the Bulldogs the edge for the No. 10 spot.

Ringwood was also in the mix for a spot, but is very similar in comparison to Merritt, including losses to the same two teams. But the strength of their victories didn’t quite match those of Central Marlow and Davenport.

Here’s how The Oklahoman’s Class B poll stands entering Week 9:

Rank, Team, Record (Prev.)
1. Laverne, 8-0 (1)
2. Wetumka, 8-0 (2)
3. Pond Creek-Hunter, 8-0 (3)
4. Rejoice Christian, 7-0 (4)
5. Alex, 8-0 (5)
6. Fox, 7-1 (6)
7. Dewar, 6-2 (7)
8. Coyle, 7-1 (8)
9. Central Marlow, 6-2 (10)
10. Davenport, 6-2 (NR)
Dropped out: Merritt, 6-2 (9)
