NORMAN — The last time Oklahoma played Stanford, 1984, not one eligible player on the current OU roster was born. So The Oklahoman surveyed seven Sooners this week to see what they actually knew about their Sun Bowl opponent.
The top student was OU cornerback Dominique Franks, who answered nine of the 10 questions correctly. Defensive end Jeremy Beal and guard Brian Simmons tied for second with six right answers. Quarterback Landry Jones, running back DeMarco Murray, linebacker Travis Lewis and receiver Ryan Broyles all scored lower, but all got at least two questions right. The questions: 1. What is Stanford’s nickname? Franks was the only one to know it is the Cardinal. Murray and Beal both said "Cardinals.” Lewis guessed "Trees.” Jones, who was recruited by Stanford, had "no idea.” 2. What conference does Stanford play in? All seven players knew it is the Pac-10, though Simmons blurted out "WAC” before quickly correcting himself. 3. Who is Stanford’s primary rival? A variety of answers came here, but not the right one: Cal. UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington were all incorrect guesses. Murray answered "Princeton,” before laughing. 4. What is the name of Stanford’s Heisman hopeful running back? Franks, Lewis, Jones and Beal correctly answered with Toby Gerhart. Murray had the right idea with "Garrett.” Simmons couldn’t recall the name, but knew he wore No. 7. 5.
