Theater Review: As stage fun, ‘Blonde’ stays true
"Legally Blonde: The Musical,” a stage adaptation of the 2001 film starring Reese Witherspoon, is an easy target. It’s slick, formulaic and has an unmemorable score. Yet, while its aspirations are decidedly modest, this frothy musical delivers, thanks to director Jerry Mitchell’s swift pacing of a story whose clever one-liners keep audiences giggling throughout.
Elle Woods is a southern California valley girl who follows the boyfriend who dumped her to Harvard Law School. She’s determined to win him back, but his goal is to become a senator by age 30. To achieve that, he decides he needs someone "more like Jackie than Marilyn.” Predictably, Elle disrupts the venerable institution’s hallowed traditions with her unrelenting perkiness, her lack of preparation and a pink wardrobe that makes her the target of numerous jokes. But thanks to the influence of a fellow classmate, Elle slowly turns her life around and sets out to prove she can indeed be taken seriously. Becky Gulsvig is marvelous as Elle, the Malibu socialite who sets out to reclaim her boyfriend but learns some important life lessons along the way. Gulsvig’s character may be blond, ditzy and more interested in fashion than in law, but it’s those very qualities that make Elle an underdog you can’t help but root for.
