Oklahoma offense, Gator defense is bracing itself for OU’s hurry-up routine

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The 1955 Sooners came to the Orange Bowl, trailed Maryland 6-0 at halftime and unleashed a surprise weapon: a no-huddle offense that Bud Wilkinson had installed but not used all season.

Oklahoma put the surprised Terrapins on their heels and won 20-6.

"Oh my gawd,” then-OU quarterback Jimmy Harris remembers a Maryland linebacker saying in the middle of the game. "Here they come again.”

So feel better, Florida Gators. At least you know it’s coming.

OU’s hurry-up offense is the primary concern for Florida’s defense in the national championship game Thursday night. Not Sam Bradford’s passing accuracy. Not an offensive line that protects Bradford with zeal. Not a battalion of playmakers.

The uptempo offense.

"Our main focus is, hey, let’s get lined up,” said Florida defensive coordinator Charlie Strong. "Our major concern right now with Oklahoma is just the tempo.”

Strong says his defense averages 60-65 snaps per game. But OU’s offense averages 80 plays per game.

"It’s hard to really practice, just to simulate getting those plays in,” Strong said. "But we’ve been trying to practice at a fast tempo.”

Florida, like most astute defenses, substitutes based on the situation. But OU’s pace makes that dicey.

Linebacker Ryan Stamper said almost every Sooner opponent had trouble getting lined up in time. "That’s going to be the really hard part,” Stamper said. "We had a scrimmage yesterday where we practiced that, getting guys on and off the field.”

OU quarterback Sam Bradford said he notices particularly early in games, defenses adjusting to the tempo, with the Sooners ready to snap the ball while the defense still is looking to the sideline for signals.

Said Gator safety Ahmad Black, "We ran it last week, blew our heads off. But we’re getting used to it.”

With Josh and Sam on the same page, I would love to see the "no huddle" become just a tad faster, by Sam's picking his own plays without so much waiting for signals from the sidelines. If FU is used to 60 plays and practices on OU's 80, turn up the heat by doing 100. If Sam is truly NFL material this coming year, he should be able to do this. If he goes to Detroit, he'll need to release a whole lot faster anyway. As for OU defense, cover the receivers and get in Tebow's face! In this case hand's up will not mean surrender, but Incompletion, Interception, and making luggage out of Gators. OU #1, #8, on 9th!

All this analysis of the OU no-huddle offense vs. the Florida defense is interesting reading, but there is one statistic that will win or lose this game. OU leads the nation with the fewest turnovers made. If they continue to protect the football like they have all season, OU will bring home the trophy. If they turn the ball over, then all bets are off.

George, I would be more concerned about Florida scoring every drive. If they don't, this could get ugly fast. OU has had a terrible special teams and to be honest, it hasn't mattered. And OU has been really good at winning the turnover margin. If Florida is going to win it is because of the turnover margin.

Jim in Fort Worth:

If I get you correctly, you are saying OU will score on every possession....and Florida will not. You might run your no huddle and score, but what will stop us from scoring soon after? You also forget that offense alone does not win games. Special teams, defense also matter. You might run your no-huddle offense, but you could also fumble the ball.
george, Gainesville - Jan 4, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer never coached the spread. Nor was the no-huddle a regular feature. That's why Maryland was surprised by it. The point is, when you run the modern offenses, making "west coast" offenses look slow, you're going to score a lot of points and quickly. That means that you don't keep the other team's offense off the field. Result? You give up a lot of yards and points. But you can still win by a bunch. It's just the nature of the game. And it makes guys like Coach Venables look bad. Bottom line is you have to measure success from within an era and not against a different time and different game.

Give the youthful OU defense a chance. You cant learn it overnight. These young players will be ready. They've shown improvement over the season. They wont let us down. They certainly showed up since Texas. I have confidence in the Sooner "D".

Guys, we're in a MUCH better spot than the last two BCS appearances. We're the dog and there is the added bonus of the HUGE chip on our guys' shoulders. It's the Sooners against the world baby. And our guys know it. There will be NO let down this go round.

Did you notice that score Maryland 6-OU-0 at halftime, Defense, Defense, during Bud and Switzers tenure, it was an OU trademark. We all thought we had another trademark defensive
guy coming in '99, guess not, the defense has evaporated in Norman. Good luck Sooners
try not to embarrass the veteran fans to much Thursday night. Just remember, if you get
beat again and Texas wins, the Texas fans are going to ride us like a cheap Hooker, forever.

George, I guess you know more than Charlie Strong does, according to the Gainesville.com article this morning. Charlie looks like he needs a drink in the picture, after watching game film of the OU offense. I think he's a bit more concerned about OU than you are..

As a Sooner in SEC land and after watching Florida and OU play this season I can tell you one thing. The Sooners CAN beat the Gators!
IF they win is a draw. The biggest problem I see is the Gators ability to run back punts and kick-offs, and blocking kicks. Those can be momentum changers even when we are beating them at the line of scrimmage! If we can control the kicking game I believe OU wins!
I think we match up favorably everywhere else. No loss of focus or intensity for SIXTY full minutes of play will bring back the BCS title to the Sooner Nation.

I can guarantee that Florida's defense is better than anything OU has faced this year (including TCU and Texas). The offensive line WILL have to protect Bradford and give him the time to find the open receiver. They will also have to create holes for Brown and Madu. They have done that all year but Florida is different. OU will have adversity in this game. It is the way they respond that will be the difference in winning or losing. I have not been impressed with Stoops and play calling in close games. Luckily there have not been any close games except for Texas. In that game the offense just sputtered in the second half when needed the most after the defense lost Reynolds. Not sure where the backup to Reynolds went after Texas but Box finally arrived and looked good as did Balogun. Why didn't the coaching staff put them in during the second half of Texas. That might have made a significant difference. The play calling during the Boise State and West Virginia games was not too good either. OU cannot rely upon the offense running up and down the field again Thursday. In between the visits to the beach and the players' talking to the media I hope Stoops is getting them ready to play an entire 60 minutes. They will need it. GO SOONERS!!! BEAT FLORIDA!!!

George, what you don't get about OU's no huddle is that you can't prepare for it. If you put in pass protection we will run, if you have run defense then #1 and #9 will burn you deep. By the time you get to the fourth quarter you are gassed and will lose the game.

I know a dude who watches a lot of football. A lot. He says he has seen all of Florida's games and all of OU's. His opinions are respected by those who know him. He is a Sooner fan, but would pick Florida if he thought they were going to win. He thinks that OU's offense will blow Florida off the field. He does not believe that Florida will do much better than a lot of teams that OU has played in the 2nd half of the season.

Cmon michael, you seriously are going to say that OU didn't care about winning in the BCS bowls against Boise State and WV? That's lame dude. Sounds like some (not all, matt is making sense) OU fans didn't learn any humility at all in the last 4 BCS games. I would keep it quiet and professional if I were you. Talking smack doesn't seem to help Venables with his defense in big games. He has stunk.

Bama played the 1st qtr like:

A) They didn't know the kickoff time.
B) They didn't know who they were playing.
C) Wondered how they got home from Johnny White's on Bourbon St., the night before.

Do you think that Bradford will be afforded all that time to prance around in the pocket like he was afforded every Saturday in the Big 12? I am not guaranteeing a win for Florida. All I know is that Meyer will prepare this team as well as anyone can. I know that the Gators will not panic due to the so-called no-huddle offense. OU can score quickly but we will adjust. We won't be like Bama who failed to adjust in the 1st quarter. The Gators will be intense, motivated, disciplined and ready.

Duane, Oklahoma City, Ok. - Jan 4, 2009 at 9:03 am
The last two years OU did not want to be in the Fiesta Bowl. This especially true when we were stuck playing a Boise State team that was a NO win situation for OU. Last season we were less than impressed with playing a West Virginia team that had just laid an egg against Pitt to lose a shot at the National Championship Game. There was a laise fare attitude with OU as they had lost to Tech and an overconfidence in beating an overated Mizzou team that was ranked #1. No disipline, no motivation, and the players believed all they had to do was show up and win the head coachless WVA Mountianteers. This season OU isn't the same team, they finish games, they have a winner's attitude, and they should take care of business in Ft Lauderdale on Thursday (without a mental lapse on special teams.) All of the players, coaches, Alums, and fans want the eigth National Championship more than any time since the 2000 season. Boomer Sooner!

They can simulate it all they want but they cannot duplicate it. Kind of like Nemo simulating being Tebow on the practice squad. You can bet Alabama practiced against the hurry-up to but looked what happened there. Not saying Florida's d won't be able to handle it, just saying they have not seen the real deal yet and won't until Jan. 8. Like i have been saying OU has got to kick them in the cajones early.
Richard, Visalia - Jan 4, 2009 at 7:33 am
George, I cannot be happier no one in Florida is quaking in their boots. Just fine....I feel a Texas Tech game coming on....with the a 28 point first quarter haymaker being delivered. Just like with Bama, the game will be over before it gets going.

Florida is gonna find out real fast that OU isn't in the sec where you line up in the I and run an isolation play. Unless they cloned Sam Bradford and is running the scout team, they're heads are going to be spinning. Screw Tebow and Spikes, screw ESPN the biggest obstacle in this game is the OU O. Keep trying florida your hands will be on your waist and your heads will be hangin when the fourth quarter comes to an end. OU 56-38
Danney, Oklahoma City - Jan 4, 2009 at 1:13 am
Well, since they average 60-65 plays per game and we run 80 per game. Hopefully those 15-20 plays will be big ones! Seriously though, the offense should put a lot of pressure on them. We just cant make mistakes and end up 3 and out and situations like that. Even if we dont score we need to turn over field position. I know that OU doesnt make those mistakes, but it doesnt take much, a false start penalty here, a couple of incompletions there.... Play loose, no mistakes.

Good luck gators. Practice against no huddle isn't the same as game time no huddle. You may think it is, but every team that had 60 put on them thought the same thing. Chaos can only be experienced not simulated.
