Think pink, youth when it comes to lipstick

Pucker up to pink. It’s an age-erasing lipstick.

Pink lipstick with a bit of shine and moisture gives a natural pop. It looks modern and more youthful than a dark, thick swipe of matte burgundy or red, said Jason Hoffman, lead principal artist for Shu Uemura.

"Anything you can do to make the skin look fresh and glowing takes years off,” he said.

Who knew lipstick could make a woman look more youthful — or older?

Charla Krupp, author of "How Not to Look Old,” said dark lipstick can be aging. It tends to seep into fine lines around your lips and draws attention to any other darkness on your face.

Pink lipstick is luminescent and gives shine and lightness around the mouth.

"Pink is one of the easiest colors to wear,” said Alex Mendez-Kelley, owner of The MakeUp Bar.

For many women, pink lipstick conjures up bubble gum or frou-frou, but colors range from pale to shocking with oodles of rose and mauve in between, she said. If ever there’s a time to embrace pink, it’s now. Pink rules at the makeup counter this year, so choices are plentiful.

Of all women, redheads probably have the most difficult time finding the best pink for them. Try a pink coral, such as Esprit by T. LeCleric or a gloss such as Nars Pillow Talk, and don’t be afraid to experiment, Mendez-Kelley said.
