→"Thomas Cromwell: The Rise and Fall of Henry VIII’s Most Notorious Minister” by Robert Hutchinson (St. Martin’s Press, $29.99).
This is a wonderful biography of Thomas Cromwell, King Henry VIII’s most important minister. He was the one who suggested to the king that he dissolve the monasteries, take their wealth and add it to the royal treasury to pay his debts. Cromwell was an assistant to
Cardinal Wolsey, who was the most important minister for the king until he failed to get a divorce of
Catherine of Aragon from the pope. That led to Wolsey’s being charged with corruption, and soon after he died of natural causes.
Cromwell soon rose in power and wealth after helping King Henry amass money and more power, but he failed the king and fell from power to a traitor’s execution. This book flows extremely well. It is entertaining, informative and hard to put down. It is recommended to those interested in English history and Henry VIII’s reign.
