The Susan G. Komen affiliate in Central and Western Oklahoma is gearing up for its 20th annual Komen Race for the Cure Sunday in Oklahoma City.
Events will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the Myriad Gardens in downtown Oklahoma City with the competitive 5k race starting at 7:30 a.m. About 20,000 people participated in last year's race, Race for the Cure organizers said.
About 75 percent of funds raised will are used for local services such as free mammograms and diagnostics, medical treatment for qualified breast cancer patients who can't afford care, and education about warning signs of breast cancer. About 25 percent of the funds raised are used to fund breast cancer research.
Registration for the race is still open. Those who wish to register may do so through Saturday on the Central and Western Oklahoma affiliate's website, www.komencentralwesternok.org, and at Red Coyote Running and Fitness, 5800 N Classen Blvd. Registration also can be done on Sunday at the race.
