Thousands more claims in after Oklahoma tornadoes

Oklahoman Published: June 10, 2013

TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Hundreds of claims roll in daily to the state's insurance companies for property damaged or destroyed in the May 19-20 tornadoes that raked central Oklahoma. And state officials are still tallying claims from the May 31 tornado outbreak.

State Insurance Commissioner John Doak says the nearly $250 million in insured losses from the May 19-20 storms are “a drop in the bucket” to what the final amount of claims will be. Doak also says there is no danger insurance companies processing claims in Oklahoma will risk insolvency.

Officials have said damages just from the May 19-20 tornadoes could reach $2 billion.

An EF5 tornado killed 24 people in Moore on May 20. Less than two weeks later, another record EF5 tornado touched down near El Reno.
