James was driving his pickup north on U.S. 259 near Broken Bow when he swerved to the left to avoid vehicles that were stopped, a trooper said. A tractor-trailer rig driven by Jesse A. Talley, 50, of Broken Bow, hit James' pickup when the pickup was in the southbound lane. James' vehicle rolled into a ditch and the truck swerved into the northbound lane. Scott tried to swerve his pickup to avoid the truck but was hit on the driver's side door instead, troopers said. James and Scott were pinned in their pickups. Both were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Talley refused medical treatment at the scene, troopers said.
