Oklahoma City police said Monday they arrested 60 people and recovered three juveniles in the past week as part of a nationwide operation with the FBI aimed at underage sex trafficking.

Operation Cross Country was a national FBI initiative targeting underage prostitution in 76 cities. In all, 105 children were recovered in cities such as San Francisco, Detroit, Milwaukee, Denver and New Orleans.

Although the effort specifically targeted underage prostitutes, most of those arrested in Oklahoma City were adult prostitutes, pimps and johns.

Two women arrested at the same time as a 16-year-old prostitute were being held on human trafficking complaints. Two 17-year-old prostitutes also were recovered.

The rest of those arrested were held on complaints including prostitution, aiding in prostitution, offering to engage in prostitution, drug crimes and crimes involving the use of computers to engage in prostitution.

Oklahoma City had a high number of arrests compared to many of the other cities involved in the sting, FBI Special Agent Gary Johnson said.

“I don't think we have a problem greater than other cities of our size,” Johnson said. “We and our partners with the Oklahoma City police were very aggressive in leaving no stone unturned.”

The Oklahoma City vice squad prepared for the sweep for weeks, arranging to meet with prostitutes by phone, the Internet and on the streets, said Lt. Doug Kimberlin, head of the vice unit.

“You are going to see a reduced presence for a while because we put a lot of people in jail over the last week,” Kimberlin said.

Sad stories

Sex trafficking brings to mind the movie “Taken,” with European gangsters kidnapping underage girls and forcing them into sex work.

While that kind of crime can happen, Johnson said most of the underage prostitutes on the street fell in with bad crowds before getting involved with a pimp.
