“It's not normally a case where people are breaking into windows, kidnapping children and forcing them into prostitution,” Johnson said.

“Most of them have very sad stories. They come from at-risk environments,” Johnson said.

Many young girls get into relationships with older men who then introduce them to drugs and prostitution. Although the girls may get involved with a pimp willingly, their choices become limited by their circumstances.

“These kids truly are victims,” Johnson said. “There is always someone out there willing to exploit them. It's not easy for them to leave. They can be subject to beatings.”

Step one

Johnson said many of the adult prostitutes arrested during the sting got involved as juveniles.

“The exploiters target those who are underage because, quite frankly, it's easier,” he said. “It's not as easy to exploit a 25-year-old woman as it is a teenager.”

Getting juveniles out of prostitution also can be difficult. One of the girls picked up this weekend in Oklahoma City was arrested last year in the Pacific Northwest in an identical FBI operation, Johnson said.

Kimberlin said it's not as easy as sending the girls home so they can be reunited with worried parents.

“When we send them home, we are basically injecting them back into the same environment that led them to get involved in this life in the first place,” he said.

Johnson said authorities are confident they arrested some major pimps in the roundup. They hope to track down more as they continue investigating with those picked up during the sting.

“This is just step one,” Johnson said. “We have a lot of work to do. We have a lot of leads on suspected pimps.” has disabled the comments for this article.
