As fall establishes itself, days get shorter and people head indoors for the cooler months to come. Fall is a perfect time to refresh and revive your home decor, just in time for the arrival of the holidays and the inevitable holiday house guests. Home projects are also a great way to avoid cabin fever.
Here are some ideas from local and national design experts for adding energy and zest to your home decor.
Cheer up your walls
One of the easiest, most dramatic and affordable ways to update your home is with wallpaper. And, with the popularity of midcentury modern, Hollywood regency and other vintage design sensibilities, vintage wallpaper is more popular than ever, said Ronnie Ketch, owner of Ketch Design Centre in Oklahoma City. The store carries “more vintage wallpaper than probably anyone in America,” Ketch said.
In fact, he estimates that out of the approximately one million rolls of wallpaper he keeps in stock, about 100,000 are vintage. The vintage wallpapers date from the late 1960s to the early 1980s.
“We never throw anything away,” he joked. Good for business, now that the old stuff is hot again.
Most popular among Ketch's vintage choices are foil and mylar designs, flocked damasks and florals and natural fibers such as corks and grass cloth.
Wallpapering is easy to do, Ketch said, with pre-pasted papers. And many brands are “strippable” for easy removal.
Try a brilliant idea
Here's an unexpected way to hang wallpaper: from the ceiling.
Designers Robert and Cortney Novogratz, authors of “Home by Novogratz” are experts at unexpected design ideas. Featured in the book is a great way to draw eyes upward, adding interest to bland tray ceilings.
The couple hung two different vintage wallpapers inside inset tray ceilings.
Both wallpaper designs feature repeating patterns — one is a large geometric pattern, the other is a small floral pattern. The different designs work together because they are complementary in scale and palette.
The social networking website Pinterest.com, where users “pin” photos with links to websites they find interesting, offers a wide variety of ideas.
This idea for a creative and unexpected wall treatment came from Pinterest: Ceiling medallions in various shapes and sizes were attached to a focal wall and painted white. Choose a bolder color for even more interest and pop.
