EDMOND — City planning commissioners have approved a preliminary plat for a new development with 188 homes, despite neighbors' objections.
The development, to be called Thunder Canyon, is to be located south of Covell Road and east of Midwest Boulevard.
City council members will make the final decision April 8 on the plat for the 140.33-acre development.
Developer Aaron Dodson said the homes will be a minimum of 2,000 square feet with an average lot of 10,000 square feet. The homes will have city water and sewer.
Redbud Canyon housing addition is located to the east of the proposed development. The city's Coffee Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant is to the south. The land to the west is undeveloped.
One of the major concerns was the density of the homes. Another concern was a proposed street leading to Covell Road that would run near the backs of some of the homes where owners feared for the safety of their children.
Water pollution, a decrease in property values and concerns over plans neighbors said were not complete were expressed at this week's meeting.
Bill Wade, 7810 Redbud Creek Drive, said the density in the proposed development is four houses to every one compared to Redbud Canyon. He wanted the developer to rearrange the lots near Redbud Canyon, which he said Dodson refused to discuss during a community connection meeting.
