Thunder chat: Anthony Slater talks about the potential Caron Butler impact

by Anthony Slater Published: February 28, 2014

NewsOK Sports 10:26 a.m. Big news in Thunderville with reports of Caron Butler coming to OKC. Here's the link to the story (http://bit.ly/1fYH89m) and make sure to get your questions in for Anthony. He'll be in around 11 a.m. to start the chat.
Anthony Slater 11:03 a.m. Sorry I'm late. Just got back from Thunder practice. Let's get this started.
Guest 11:04 a.m. Can Butler guard LeBron and still score from the outside and who does he replace on the line-up?
Anthony Slater 11:05 a.m. I'm not sure anyone in the league can truly guard LeBron, but Butler provides another body. He's an average to above-average defender, a proven scorer (15 ppg in his career, 11 this year) and veteran presence (12th year in the league) with championship experience (won a title with the Mavs in 2011).
Anthony Slater 11:07 a.m. As far as whose minutes he takes, I think that starts with Jeremy Lamb. Lamb had a solid start to his first season in an NBA rotation, but he's tailed off of late. His shooting percentages are way down and his role has been a bit diminished. Butler's addition just adds to that. Also, Thabo, Fish, PJ3 and some others might see a slight dip if Butler gets big minutes.
Nick 11:07 a.m. Will he get any PT?
Anthony Slater 11:09 a.m. I think that still remains the big question. Remember around this time last year, when the Thunder added Ronnie Brewer and it figured to be an important pick-up...But Brewer never got off the bench. So there's a possibility that Brooks likes enough what he has and doesn't give Butler much run.
Anthony Slater 11:09 a.m. But to be fair, Butler is a far more impactful player than Brewer.
Guest 11:09 a.m. If Adams is the Thunder's future, is Brooks showing it now by now playing him at least 30 minutes with Perkins gone or is he just trying to show it, without doing it, your take?
Anthony Slater 11:11 a.m. Not sure exactly what the question is lol, but I'll give my take on Adams. I do think everyone within the Thunder organization views Adams as the team's future starting center. And I think Brooks will continue to show more trust in him over the next six weeks. There are some matchups where his minutes will be limited (16 vs LAC on Sunday), but others where he'll play 30-plus if he stays out of foul trouble, like tonight against Memphis' mammoth frontline.
Anthony Slater 11:12 a.m. This will be a vital stretch for Adams' development.
Guest 11:12 a.m. why does berry tramel always call darnell "rfd" on the thunder buddies
Anthony Slater 11:12 a.m. Has to do with an old TV show called Mayberry RFD that only Berry would still reference.
Guest 11:12 a.m. Do you think that Westbrook is trying to outscore KD to the detriment of winning games, with Brooks doing nothing about it?
Anthony Slater 11:15 a.m. No. Westbrook's reinsertion hasn't done anything to KD's production. He's had 28, 42 and 28 in the three games since Westbrook's return. He took 30 shots against the Clippers. He won three scoring titles while playing every game with Westbrook. The two can coincide fine. The recent struggles have nothing to do with that on-court relationship.
Guest 11:15 a.m. which player would have been a better signing, butler or danny granger
Anthony Slater 11:16 a.m. I actually like Butler more than Granger at this point. Granger's had such injury problems the past few seasons and it seems like that's sapped his athleticism almost completely.
Guest 11:17 a.m. how long will it take for russell to be truly back
Anthony Slater 11:18 a.m. Probably another week or two to completely get back into the flow. The first time around, when he returned in early November, he didn't start to hit his stride until later that month. But then he really took off. I'd expect some of the same, with spotty production until later in March.
Anthony Slater 11:19 a.m. That said, I thought he looked pretty good against Cleveland. Took some ill-advised shots late (1-of-6 in the fourth quarter), but played well other than that. Had 24 points and nine assists, took over for certain spurts. He'll be fine...as long as that knee doesn't act up again.
Guest 11:19 a.m. how come reggie and lamb have struggled so much?
Anthony Slater 11:20 a.m. May be a rookie wall type thing. I know Reggie is in his third year and Lamb his second, but neither has been in an NBA rotation for a full season like they are this season. Darnell wrote about it a little today:

http://newsok.com/reggie-jackson-jeremy-lamb-hit-the-wall/article/3938157

Anthony Slater 11:21 a.m. But moving forward, both need to find their second wind. Particularly Jackson. He's going to be crucial down the stretch and into the playoffs, serving as the 6th man and leader of that second unit. His FG% has gone down every month this season and he's struggled big time lately. OKC needs him to turn it around.
thun 11:21 a.m. I REALLY think Scott should start him oversefolsa
Anthony Slater 11:21 a.m. Not happening
kk 11:22 a.m. any word how Russell's knee is holding up?
Anthony Slater 11:23 a.m. Seems fine through three games. His minutes are slowly being amped up. But I've learned to never assume with his knee. He could drop 65 tonight and get a scope tomorrow. Or he could never have issues again. Neither would surprise me.
J. Lamb 11:23 a.m. Over/under total 20 minutes for Butler in the playoffs?
Anthony Slater 11:24 a.m. 20 minutes per game? Under. I think he'll be somewhere in the 10-12 mpg range, with certain games that he might get 20 and certain games he might not get off the bench. But we'll see.
Taylor 11:24 a.m. What number will Caron Butler wear?
Guest 11:24 a.m. What number will Caron Butler wear?
Anthony Slater 11:25 a.m. Popular question, but still one yet to be decided. The signing actually can't go through until he clears waivers on 4 p.m. CT Saturday. So we won't know what number he'll wear until it becomes official.
Ryan 11:25 a.m. Is Butler just a band aid solution for this year, or does he come back the next couple of years like Fisher?
Anthony Slater 11:26 a.m. My guess is he's just a one-and-done with OKC. But you never know. A lot will probably depend on his performance in the next few months.
Guest 11:26 a.m. You think thunder will go after another player or naw
Anthony Slater 11:26 a.m. Nah, I'd guess they're done from here. They have an open roster spot, but nearly no financial wiggling room.
Guest 11:27 a.m. Are you a fan of the 3 point guard lineup?
Anthony Slater 11:28 a.m. At times, yeah, I think it works. The best part about it is that KD drops to the four spot, where he's been great in spurts this season. It forces the other team into some uncomfortable matchups and get dictate subbing patterns. But it's only sustainable in spurts. Brooks seems to typically save it until mid-way through the fourth quarter.
Guest 11:28 a.m. Will butler play tonight
Anthony Slater 11:29 a.m. Nope. Still has to clear waivers on Saturday. Likely won't become official until Sunday and I wouldn't expect him to be in the lineup until Tuesday against Philly.
Josh 11:29 a.m. Why has our defense been so bad recently?
Anthony Slater 11:29 a.m. Lack of energy/effort and a little bit of the Kendrick Perkins effect. KC has given up 110 or more points in every game Perkins has missed this season.
Anthony Slater 11:31 a.m. But the bigger problem is that energy/effort, particularly on the perimeter. Opposing guards have been torching them lately (Wade/Crawford/Barnes/Irving/Jack). The Thunder backcourt has been providing little pressure and been getting mixed up in transition. They left Kyrie Irving wide open for two HUGE fourth quarter threes on Wednesday. You can't do that.
Guest 11:31 a.m. What is KD MVP hopes now
Anthony Slater 11:33 a.m. I still think he's the favorite, but the scales are slowly tipping back toward LeBron. Durant hasn't played poorly lately, but LeBron has been out of his mind and Miami is 9-1 in February, with one of those wins a blowout where he clearly outplayed KD. Still Durant's to lose, but we have a race again.
Guest 11:33 a.m. Was the Tantrum of Durant due to losing the last game or with his teammates?
Anthony Slater 11:34 a.m. Both. Mad at the result and mad that both he and his teammates allowed the result. They gave up 42 points in the fourth quarter to the worst shooting team in the NBA, blowing a 12-point lead at home. It was natural frustration. Understandable. Although I heard the Gatorade kick splashed some fans in the front row, which isn't a good look.
Guest 11:35 a.m. Batman and Robin finally got Alfred, the Butler!
Anthony Slater 11:35 a.m. Haha, we'll end on that one.
Anthony Slater 11:35 a.m. Thanks for everyone who asked questions and, again, sorry for those of you who I couldn't get to. There were a ton of great comments today. Talk to you all soon.
