NewsOK Sports 10:09 a.m. Welcome to the Power Lunch chat - Thunder edition. Darnell Mayberry will be on around 11 a.m. to answer your questions and talk Thunder, so get your questions in now. Thanks for joining us.
Darnell Mayberry 11:00 a.m. Greetings, ladies and gents.
Darnell Mayberry 11:01 a.m. FYI, I'm currently inside the team's morning shootaround, so when Kevin Durant steps over I'll have to take a break. But I'll be back. In the meantime, let's get started.
Shawn 11:01 a.m. Am I off track to think that the defensive intensity should start with KD and Westbrook? One of them should be on James Harden at all times tonight. If they fail against him, it won't be because they don't have the talent to get the job done.
Darnell Mayberry 11:03 a.m. No. Not at all, Shawn. I completely agree with you. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Those two need to be consistent on defense. They bring it sometimes, or in certain stretches. But they don't have the consistent effort needed to keep this team at an elite level on that end. We're seeing that be exposed without Sefolosha and Perkins.
SJ 11:03 a.m. There are some suggestions by the local media that the team is tuning out Coach Brooks. That would be a shame considering how close we are to possibly winning a title. Are you seeing this as an issue, or just poorly handled frustration?
Darnell Mayberry 11:05 a.m. I don't think they're tuning him out. I think that's a stretch. I just think the team is in a funk right now.
Chuck 11:05 a.m. Funny how Tabo and Perk are now sorely missed when they have been the most disregarded members of this team all year
Darnell Mayberry 11:05 a.m. I think some definitely see their worth now if they didn't before. But I still don't think this team should be this bad without them.
Guest 11:05 a.m. Why won't brooks start collision and keep Adams in the 2nd unit. I think collison improves their defense while on the court substantially compared to off.
Darnell Mayberry 11:06 a.m. I agree that Collison improves the defense. But if you start him, you're taking away a key member of your second unit. But there's no reason Collison shouldn't be playing more than he is currently.
Thabo Sefolosha 11:06 a.m. I think the Thunder need me right now?
Kendrick Perkins 11:07 a.m. You think the Thunder need me Darnell?
Darnell Mayberry 11:07 a.m. Yes. And yes.
Kevin Durant 11:07 a.m. Im the league Mvp? What do you think Darnell? Im sorry for playing for the triple double vs Lakers... Sorry Darnell
Darnell Mayberry 11:07 a.m. That was disappointing to see.
Guest 11:07 a.m. Whos fault is it that the thunder are playing bad defense?
Darnell Mayberry 11:09 a.m. It's a lot of things. And no one person's. Being without two starters is the first thing. But having to rely on a rookie and a second-year player as their replacements is a big difference that also matters just as much. Guys also aren't taking pride in stopping their man. They're not communicating. They're not helping. They're not getting back in transition...It's a lot of things.
dr. el prez 11:09 a.m. Darnell, you've written varying degrees of selfishness have been exhibited by Durant, Westbrook, and Jackson as of late. Is this new from your unique view as the beat writer, or something you've seen before but was just smoothed over by the presence of Perkins, Collison, Thabo and Fisher doing most of the blue collar work on defense? Have these three players stopped listening to Scott Brooks?
Darnell Mayberry 11:11 a.m. Again, I don't think the players have stopped listening to Brooks. I just think a lot of different players have different things going on individually now that are preventing them from playing a team game and a team game only. I've seen certain things like stat-padding in the past. But this is the first time since the first season that I've seen so many guys on separate pages.
Jacob 11:12 a.m. What's the biggest part of the Thunder's current defensive problem: lack of communication, effort, or something else?
Darnell Mayberry 11:12 a.m. Like I said, I think all of that is part of the issue. But if you're asking the biggest, I'd say a lack of pride. You can't let a guy go off for 40 one game and then come right back out and give up 40 the next.
Guest 11:13 a.m. How big is this game in terms of a confidence boost? Who is the player that needs the biggest boost for the rest of this stretch?
Darnell Mayberry 11:14 a.m. It's a big game because the Rockets are rolling and the Thunder is struggling, and because Houston does a lot that the Thunder is having a hard time defending. So getting that defensive identity back in a game like this would be huge. And I'd like to see Jeremy Lamb start producing again.
Shawn 11:14 a.m. How fast will Adams and Thabeet foul out tonight trying to guard Dwight Howard?
Darnell Mayberry 11:15 a.m. Could be quick. Let's hope not.
Scott 11:15 a.m. Why is it that Brooks really seems to struggle when he has to get away from his "set" rotation. He has been a head coach long enough to adjust by now
Darnell Mayberry 11:17 a.
