Share “OKC Thunder is going Green”

Jeff Green’s latest nickname has come from the most unlikely of sources — Thunder coach Scott Brooks.

"Mr. Consistency,” Brooks labeled his second-year forward.

"He’s very efficient with his game. He’s meticulous in his work, and I love the way he approaches the game. For a young player, he has a very veteran’s approach to the game. I think that’s helped. It’s paying off.”

The results are just buried in the shadows of Kevin Durant’s recent scoring spree.

But with February averages of 20.1 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.1 assists, Green has arrived as a quality No. 2 option, no longer carrying the dubious distinction of being the player for whom the franchise traded a likely Hall of Famer in Ray Allen.

Green is one of only seven players averaging at least 20 points and nine rebounds in February. Orlando’s Dwight Howard, San Antonio’s Tim Duncan, Houston’s Yao Ming, the Los Angeles Lakers’ Pau Gasol, Washington’s Antawn Jamison and New York’s David Lee are the other six. Only Lee has not been named an All-Star.

Still, Green doesn’t deem himself worthy of his coach’s nickname.

"I haven’t proved myself to be that yet,” said Green, who has also been named "Uncle Jeff” by Cleveland star LeBron James and "Young Dro” by teammate Desmond Mason.

"It’s been a couple of games where the accuracy isn’t there. I’m a big critic of myself. I don’t think I’ve been playing that well where I deserve that nickname.”

It’s undeniable, though, that Green has become a more savvy player as the season labors on.

He’s attempting only 2.8 3-pointers per game this month, down from 3.5 in January and 4.0 in December.
