NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s punishment came swift and strong on Tuesday afternoon, when he announced that Clippers owner Donald Sterling would be given a lifetime ban and $2.5 million fine for his racially charged comments that surfaced this past weekend.

And now, Silver says, the onus is on the league’s Board of Governors. With a three-quarters vote, the NBA’s other owners could remove Sterling from his post and force a sale of the Clippers.

In the wake of the decision, many owners have come out with public statements backing Silver’s actions, including Thunder chairman Clay Bennett.

“The Oklahoma City Thunder strongly supports the decisive action taken today by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver,” Bennett said in a statement. “Ours is a league of inclusion, tolerance and fairness. The Thunder organization will continue to work to foster the tenets of diversity and respect, and build on that standard moving forward.”
