Thunder player Kyle Weaver returns to Oklahoma City Boys & Girls Club

To the kids at the Memorial Park Boys & Girls Club, Kyle Weaver is more than just an Oklahoma City Thunder basketball player. He’s a friend who helps them with their homework, plays with them and inspires them to work hard and stay out of trouble.

That’s why a group of about 24 kids dubbed "Weaver’s Achievers” got together Tuesday afternoon to honor the player with a pizza party and a video tribute. In turn, Weaver honored the kids with a large framed Thunder jersey.

"They treat him like a regular kid here,” said A. Jaye Johnson, unit director of the Memorial Park Boys & Girls Club. "I really think he likes it. He doesn’t get bombarded with ‘Can we have your autograph?’ It’s ‘Hey Kyle, can you help me with my homework? Hey Kyle, do you want to play pool?’ He can come here and just be a regular person.”

"It’s been fun because he has made my grades change very good,” said Kamari Burden, 9, of Oklahoma City. "We at the Boys & Girls Club, we very love him ... he makes mostly everything change.”

Weaver started spending time with the kids at the club when he first started playing for the Thunder in August 2008, though that was not his first experience with the club. In fact, without his local Boys & Girls Club when he was growing up in Beloit, Wis.
