Thunder's Grant Long maturing into analyst role

by Mel Bracht Published: February 27, 2009
Similar to the way the Oklahoma City Thunder is growing up as an NBA team, Grant Long is maturing as the team’s television analyst.

Long, a 14-year NBA veteran, has made excellent strides since the start of the season, teaming with enthusiastic play-by-play announcer Brian Davis. Although Long has some broadcast experience with the Atlanta Hawks, he spent the past two seasons in player development with his alma mater, Eastern Michigan.

"I think Grant quickly has become one of the best analysts in the league,” said Ken Adelson, Thunder senior vice president and executive producer. "He has great court vision. He sees the game from the perspective as a player, as a coach and a fan.”

A 6-foot-8 forward, Long averaged 9.5 points and 6.1 rebounds a game in his NBA career. He can relate to what Thunder players are going through in having played for the then-Vancouver Grizzlies and the expansion Miami Heat.

Long credited Davis, a veteran announcer, in helping him explain things on the court when he might get off on a tangent.

"He is able to kind of pick that up for me and reel it back in and kind of make it palatable for the audience,” he said.

The nephew of ex-NBA player John Long and cousin of ex-NBA player Terry Mills, Long has some athletes in his own family in sons Garvis and Gavar.
